VI. Guest Introductions– Celeste introduced William K. Black, Jr. our Dearborn County Emergency Management Director as our speaker for today. He served as Emergency Management Deputy Director for 25 years. Bill’s experience and background in emergency services is very impressive. He founded the Dearborn County Water Rescue in 1984 and serves as Captain of Water Rescue and a diver. He also manages 65+ volunteers for Dearborn County Water Rescue, R.A.C.E.S (Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Services) and C.E.R.T. Team (Community Emergency Response Team) just to name a few organizations that he is a member.
Since September 11, 2001 and just listening to the news around us, planning has become a major area of concern for everyone. His PowerPoint presentation was in depth and informative. Bill asked if YOU are not ready to take care of you, your employees and business, who is? We need to be prepared for at least 72 hours during and after an Emergency/disaster. He asked us very important questions on preparedness, such as–do you have:
1. A line of authority established for your staff
2. Written SOP/SOG’s to follow.
3. Off-site back-ups.
4. Do you know how to operate your safety equipment in the workplace?
5. Do you know where the shut-off valves are?
We need to create an Emergency Management Plan for your office/business and to make sure the staff understand it and can put it in action.
Bill brought several emergency handouts for the members. These are also available at his office. His talk on “Are You Ready?” was very educational. Sitting in our seats and thinking as a homeowner yes, maybe, but as a businessperson asking ourselves–“Are we prepared?” Probably not! As Bill spoke on preparedness and explaining, the different hazards that we may face there are many places that improvements can be made. If you have any questions, you may find Bill at Dearborn County Emergency Management, 401 West High Street, Lawrenceburg, 47025.
Bebe had to leave and Mike Rafferty took over and led the one-minute introductions.
Next meeting will be Wednesday evening Oct 9, 2013 at Sugar Ridge. Aaron Negangard, our county’s Prosecuting Attorney, will be our speaker. Spouses and other guests are invited.
Meeting adjourned 9:20 am.
Minutes respectfully submitted by: Kate Karaus
